How to Prepare Your Philadelphia Home for Air Conditioning Installation

May 07, 2015

So you’ve recognized that it’s time to upgrade your existing air conditioning system to a more energy efficient system. Good thinking! You’re buying in to your family’s comfort as well as the decreasing of your utility bills and responsible consumption of energy. While those are all great things there are still a few more things you can do to ready your Philadelphia home before you start the air conditioning installation process.

1. Review the Manual J Heating and Cooling Load

First of all, the AC contractor should have conducted what’s called a heating and cooling load calculation. This involved calculation takes into account the home’s structure, roof, windows, direction and location to identify the size and type of equipment needed. Ask to see the load calculation and have it broken down for you. If the contractor did what’s known as a Block Assessment, or did not complete a load calculation at all, we would strongly recommend choosing another contractor or calling Stallion Heating Plumbing Air Conditioning at 215-278-9690. Your Philadelphia HVAC expert will be able to offer you a full assessment.

2. Clean and Seal Ducts.

Next, have the company clean your ductwork. It’s not a good idea to introduce caked on dirt and dust from a crotchety old duct system to your brand new air conditioning system. The health of your complete system and the quality of the air you breathe kicks off with your ducts giving you clean air, so make sure that they are cleaned and appropriately sealed by the HVAC contractor. If you can’t remember the last time you had your ducts cleaned or have never had them cleaned, have the contractor perform a duct cleaning prior to your new AC installation.

3. Clear a Path.

Prior to the air conditioner installation you will also want to clear the area where equipment will be installed, and ensure it is easy to access. There are stairs, landscaping porches, decks or other things close to the AC, clear the area as best as you can. Make sure the area is clear of yard waste like big sticks and leaf piles so installation is even more stress-free. Also make sure to clear away anything else that could get in your installation professional’s way such as garden hoses, rakes, or children’s toys. Make sure pets are contained so they do not get in the way of the installation crew.
