How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays a critical duty as your furnace prepares to warm your home.
Here’s what happens after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board commences running the draft inducer blower motor. This drains combustion gases from the heat exchanger and moves in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that plenty of air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and signals the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and supplies heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Malfunctions
When your pressure switch isn’t functioning correctly, you’ll likely hear the fan start and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace turns off completely. When a part isn’t functioning right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.
Your furnace will show you something is amiss with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to exhibit error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may see short flashes or an alternating slow flash as it communicates a fault code.
